The World Tree Is Coal And You Must Mine

The world had a World Tree. Aeons ago. Now it has a legendary coal seam.

What lingers in the darkness beneath the earth?

The World Tree Is Coal And You Must Mine is a one-page, pay-what-you-want, solo RPG. You can pick it up quickly and play it in less than an hour.

With every month of mining, you carve out and sell more coal. With every month, there's a chance that you'll find an ancient treasure from the time of the world's verdure, a fossil or World Tree Seed or piece of "fool's anthracite". And every month, there's a risk that your pick will break through into an ancient chamber where some mythic horror has long been entombed.

How far will you push your luck?

It's black lung if you're lucky. The game ends if you die in the dark.

Get it at DriveThruRPG, itch dot io, or RPG Trader.

Ecoheroism and Dragonspill

Ecoheroism title. A slain dragon pierced by swords is emblazoned with caution tape.

A dragon embodies fire, poison, and wrath. Slaying the monster doesn't make it safe!

Every part of the dragon's body, from claws to gizzard to skin, is uniquely hazardous.

Burying the heart will poison the groundwater for fifty leagues around. Burning the skin scars the sky for decades. Leaving the ribs exposed brings down a curse on the slayer's descendants. The lungs keep pumping out smog. The claws spread drought.

If left to decay, the dragon's hatefulness seeps into the environment, causing terror and ruin for leagues around.

Ecoheroism is a system-neutral tabletop roleplaying game supplement developing this idea.

To engage in ecoheroism is to deal with a dragon carcass in a responsible, safe, and environmentally friendly way.

Do you tie it to a church bell? Drop it in a volcano? Bury it fifty feet underground?

Find the best way to safely dispose of the bits of a dragon carcass, or experience a dragonspill: the terrible environmental consequences of your failure.

Four pages from the supplement. Dice tables. Red and yellow colour scheme.

Wallace Wunkle's Tragedy Factory

I have an upcoming weird experimental narrative solo game. It's about a harlequin demon, the fantabulous floating factory he runs, and the power of allegory.

You play as 'the good child' on the factory tour, where the other children all have minor foibles which will surely come into play. But what kind of lesson do you learn when you win a rigged game?

Monsters of the Month: Malevolent Revenants

The crumbling monuments of the living are haunted by spiteful remnants. Rotted bodies stir in their catacombs and merge in shambling hordes. Powerful mage-wights linger under peat mounds, poring over parchment secrets.

Portents stalk the ruins, faceless dry flesh barely containing their wrathful spirits. In ancient sepulchres deep beneath the earth, towering warriors guard glittering treasures. Above them, the night's silence stutters with the cackles of bestial ghuls.

Wiki Articles Are Wizards!

Wizards are bizarre uniquities who carve their own paths through reality like rogue stars.

Wiki Articles Are Wizards [citation needed] is my new zine for crafting these characters out of wiki articles, then pitting them against each other in a wizard-off!

To get a thematically consistent weird wizard with spooky powers and an appropriately unpleasant set of personality traits, you'll want to use procedural generation rather than strictly random generation. This small book gives you a comprehensive method for doing that, using wiki articles as the inspirational material, and has all sorts of bonus wizard-lore to boot.

🧙 Available today!

And I'm publishing a companion piece: a collection of troublesome characters, 30 Wicked Wizards!

From Miarthetrolut the Regulator (who meddles with fish kinematics) to Sthogar the Ambitious (and his reanimated giant spiders)!

The thirty wizards and archwizards in this zine-style book are all made using the Wiki Articles Are Wizards rules, all laid out in a splattery OSR style, and all very weird and wicked.

🧙 Also available today!

As well as print copies, you can get a digital edition of either zine!

Are you interested in both? Hey! You can grab the PDF bundle!

Craft wizards out of Wiki articles

The Kickstarter campaign for my weird 2025 Zine Quest contribution is wrapping up, and I'm blown away with the level of support.

Sample draft zine spread. Utterly forbidden wizardly knowledge. Torn pages.

Wiki Articles Are Wizards [citation needed] is mostly about making bizarre wizards from wiki articles and showing them off in duels. In this note which I'm cross-posting from a Kickstarter update, I'll show you how it works.

Step one: Find an article.

Any decently long article with descriptive bits will do. Let’s choose the Wikipedia article on ‘puzzles’.

Step two: Generate some wizard aspects.

Amongst the zine's many tables, some (pages 10–17) give you templates which turn wiki article content into wizard features. Choose a template, then fill in its blanks by picking something out of the article.

For example, sometimes you'll be asked to use a little bit of description from the article, turning it into an activity, descriptor, or thingummy. Other times you'll compress and mangle names from the article’s references into a fantastic name. (See page 8 for more info!)

We'll pick out some descriptive phrases from our chosen article on puzzles: riddle of the Sphinx’, ‘hangman’, ‘missing square’, ‘used the resulting pieces as an aid for teaching’, ‘16th century’. We turn them into wizard traits:

  • Kangdell the Sphinx’s Hangman was cast down into this world from the Great Dreaming sixteen centuries ago. From head to toe, his body is missing squares; he uses the pieces as an aid for teaching.

Note that 'Kangdell' is a mangled name from the article's reference section.

Then we can pick out some more content from the wiki article and use it to construct more traits: the Maze of Games’, ‘the World’s Biggest Puzzle’, ‘put pieces together (or take them apart)’

  • They call his lair the Maze of Games. His minions are automata which put pieces together (and take things apart) without cease. The work currently open on his lectern is titled: The World’s Biggest Puzzle.

Pages 18–21 are full of even more tables, to give our wizard some personality descriptors. We use these by choosing the first and last letter of the article title, which in our example are the P and S from ‘puzzles’. Add some random rolls for the relevant tables and we find that Kangdell is 'particularly proud', and 'somewhat spiteful'.

We round it out with a few more traits, in particular merging a few categories from the article into his research interests: requiring strict adherence to a particular kind of order’, ‘Category: List of impossible puzzles’, ‘Category: List of puzzle types’, ‘Category: Mechanical disentanglement’

  • People find Kangdell the Sphinx’s Hangman to be particularly proud and somewhat spiteful. He requires strict adherence to his particular kind of order. He amuses himself by disentangling types of impossible puzzles.

Step three: Create spells, defences, and artefacts.

Now that we know what Kangdell is like and have a sense of his 'theme', we create his magical arsenal from article content, using some simple guidelines for spell names (pages 22–23). We'll create three spells, three defences, and three artefacts.

Picking some descriptive content out from the wiki article and turning them into spell names: ‘becoming’, ‘hidden object’, ‘the size of a sand grain’, ‘sawed around’, ‘many riddles’.

Three powerful spells Kangdell knows:

  • Swilsnor’s Hidden Saw
  • Spoerork’s Many Riddles
  • Become The Size Of A Sand Grain

Then picking out some article content that sounds more defensive or obscuring: World Cube’, three cups’, ‘unite the elements’, ‘enigmatology’, ‘disentanglement puzzles’, ‘the outline’.

Three of Kangdell's magical defences:

  • Eymaugladoun’s Three Cups of Disentanglement
  • Pftpievandal’s Enigmatic Outline
  • Uniting of the World Cube’s Elements

Our wizard should also have some magical treasures and objects of power! This article has lots of great possibilities, and I ended up choosing: nine linked-rings’, ‘temple tablets’, ‘cartographer’, ‘a perplexing problem’, ‘folding problem’, ‘advanced device’.

Three artefacts secretly in Kangdell's possession:

  • Botesmackar the Cartographer’s Advanced Device
  • The Nine Linked Rings of Folding
  • The Perplexingly Problematic Temple Tablets

Step four: Pick extra lore and traits.

We can add detail to Kangdell the Sphinx’s Hangman by sprinkling in lore and special powers from the extra tables of Ancillary Wizard Information (Part 6 of the zine). Here are some possibilities:

  • Should his staff ever be broken, Kangdell breaks into the same number of pieces (and is mildly inconvenienced as a result).
  • He has fragmented memories of four centuries in the jar, bored out of his brain (which was all he was at the time).
  • Kangdell wears socks and sandals and carries a little grimoire in his deep-pocketed robe.
  • His tower is cuboid, and moves when nobody is watching. Its stones are lined with symbol-inscribed tiles.

There's lots to do with Kangdell!

Our wizard is prone to petty grudges, magical disputes, and ego clashes, and as a result, his cabal will be duelling in the Great Wizard-Off. For information on this and so much more, check out the zine! Available now!

The First RPG Ever Published in 2025

It occurred to me that living in New Zealand (GMT+13) means a shot at being the first to publish a TTRPG in 2025.

So here it is.

Small Medium At Large. Book cover.

The premise

SMALL MEDIUM AT LARGE is a mystery puzzle-based role-playing game for two players. Play as a small, psychic cat burglar and the specialised anti-psychic hired to hunt them down.

The background

Usually, of course, the REGIONAL CONSTABULARY simply hire a MEDIUM to solve any given crime. But this time, a MEDIUM is the perpetrator, and is muddying the PSYCHIC AETHER to cover their tracks. What's needed is a CLAIRVOYANT whose third eye can still see when things are UNCLEAR.

An UNCLEARVOYANT, in fact.

The game

This is a joke but also an actual game I made, and published at 12:45 AM, January 1, 2025, New Zealand time. Until I hear otherwise from my competitors in the Republic of Kiribati, I am declaring it to be The First TTRPG Of 2025.

You can check it out here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/507211/SMALL-MEDIUM-AT-LARGE

Monsters of the Month: Otherworldly Aberrations

The sky ruptures along some philosophical faultline and the sun splatters across the horizon like a dropped egg. There comes the distant dull crack of the cosmos breaking. Aberrant things begin to drip out of fissures in reality.

Fluorescent vermin with odd limbs come to graze on the verdant quiddity. Abominations fall from the flickering stars, and the world turns to mismatched bone and metal as they crawl by. There is something striding across the upper atmosphere, spindly legs higher than any tower. Space itself breaks open, and things feed on its viscera.

Divider.

Introducing the first in what should be a series of monster books for Dungeons & Dragons! This one is all about extraplanar and interdimensional beasties, like the Treader: an infinitely-long spindly leg dangling from the sky and traipsing about the landscape.

Inside this creature compendium, you'll find

  •     38 pages of bizarre monsters from CR 0 to CR 16
  •     Tactical advice for each monster
  •     Creatures crafted with modern D&D 5e design principles

Updating past TTRPG work for the year 2024

I set aside some time this week to apply last year's fancy purple Periapt Games logo update to most of my previously published work. Along the way I found myself freshening things up with some nicer graphics, improved hyperlinking, typo corrections, and a little bit of extra content.

This meant minor updates to half a dozen different things (note, affiliate links):

120 Fantasy Food Inspirations

We Will Yet Triumph: An Imagination Game

Spells: Made More Magical (5e)

and

Spells: Made More Magical (system neutral)

Almanac of the Archaic

A Fistful of Curiosities: Ten Site-based Mysteries, Oddities, and Puzzles

It was a bit more of a process than I expected, with all the files in different layouts and most of them generated using technology (LaTeX) that I stopped using for TTRPG content a year ago. And then there was the extra work of uploading and double-checking the files, resetting the file previews, updating storefront images, etc. It's definitely enough to make me want to stick with my nice new logo for a long time.

If you bought or received any of this older work via DriveThruRPG, you can download the new versions for free through your account there. Thanks!

The year ahead (and happy 50th birthday to D&D)

It's been fifty-two years since the creation of tabletop roleplaying games – or maybe fifty-five depending on which of the Three Founding Daves you think had the most pivotal role.

But January 2024 is spooling out past us, which means it's now fifty years since the editing, proofing, printing, marketing, and overall publication of the now-quinquagenarian Dungeons and Dragons by some guy who wasn't named Dave at all.

That makes it a date of celebration to a publisher, which I'm endeavouring to be!

After moving home and getting injured at the end of last year, I'm behind where I had hoped to be with several half-finished projects: a mythic reimagining of fantasy peoples, a weird book of monsters, and a puzzle-focused adventure.

Most of the creative work for these is done. Now is the time to buckle down and start putting all the elements and refinements together. I'm hoping to get a minimum of two major projects published this year, and there's a lot of minor things I could be putting forth as well.

Here's to a happy and productive 2024!

Thursday, 23 November 2023

This month's writing

Here at Periapt Games I've just reached the first milestone on some fantasy monster design work for an upcoming book. The first milestone is "all the content is drafted". The second milestone will be getting through all the playtesting and ensuing revisions; third is finishing the supporting text and copy-editing; fourth is the layout being done; fifth is the art being finalised and proofs approved; etc.

(A major lesson in writing for production is that the actual writing is only a sliver of the process.)

What's my philosophy of fantasy monster design?

A monster should be easy to run. It should be plausible and/or fit a specific setting. It should be fresh. It should touch on classic tropes, but should also be weird. It should be easily tweaked or be presented alongside minor variations.

That means...

Aberrant grazers. Sorcerous byproducts. Creatures that lurk, beguile, and trap. Entities which warp the world around them. Small things made giant. Spells escaped from spellbooks and given form. Swarms which actually work the way they ought to. Monsters that are also transdimensional portals. The world's largest garden pest. Ethereal spirits lurking at the heart of permanently raging storms. And many many more.

And maybe whatever this thing is?

Hopefully I'll be able to share a more substantive update before the end of the year!

Steps to a Hero (end of the campaign)

Do you want fantasy characters who have deep ties to their world? Backstory that directly affects mechanical traits? A fun, fast, unique character creation minigame?

We're down to the last 24 hours of the Kickstarter campaign for Steps To A Hero. It's the 125+ page book implementing a lifepath character generation system designed for compatibility with D&D 5e!

Thanks to everyone who's already supported the project!

Book preview pages

What's a lifepath?

A lifepath is a unique tool for producing a roleplaying game character, beginning them early in life and setting them down a path to become the person that the player will begin the game with. It tells a story about how a character came about, replacing the common process of generating race, background, ability scores, and other traits.

A lifepath is a process of discovery, and each step on the path is an event, decision, or encounter which will reveal things about your character – generating both backstory and game-mechanical traits as you go. Everything in the book is streamlined for 5e, overriding or complementing parts of the base game.

What's in the book?

In Steps to a Hero, you’ll find

  • Everything you need to develop characters with lifepaths for fifth-edition fantasy roleplaying
  • 300 unique lifepath 'steps', each one combining a piece of weird/medieval fantasy short fiction and corresponding character traits
  • A comprehensive set of rules describing the lifepath process, plus optional rules for tweaking character generation
  • A ton of 5e game content including hundreds of new background features, and methods to make many millions of possible stories and backgrounds
  • Support for 12 ancestries, including all the classics, plus half-djinni, half-minotaur, half-dryad, and shorewalker
Discover the remarkable story of each character’s early life, and determine how those experiences gave them the unique abilities and traits in their background.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Venture forth!

Jade Perida: A 5e character made using lifepath generation

The Kickstarter campaign for my new book is three days in and has reached its funding goal. Today I'm sharing a 5e fantasy character created with the Steps to a Hero system.

The book has several ways to randomly generate character ancestries. For this one I used the balanced method, which has a small bias towards human ancestry. In today’s case, nine dice rolls gave us djinni and elf ancestry, and the story of someone's life.

Jade is not a physically brawny character, but a mental powerhouse. The uncovered story of her life is a driven and noble one. She set off at age 28 (young, for someone with elven blood) on a three-year journey.

Jade has one lifepath step from each ancestry, and another four steps that are events in her life. Jade is a bit of an outlier in that she didn't learn to use any tools over the course of her lifepath, but she ended up with plenty on her character sheet: lots of languages, skills, weapon proficiencies, starting equipment, and background features.

Steps to a Hero includes an optional rule for selecting a class based on the character's lifepath. In return for this constraint, a character can transfer a point from as many as five ability scores into one of their choice (to a cap of 19). We applied this rule and found that Jade is torn between Paladin, Wizard, and Cleric. Given her modest physical attributes and the righteous path in her background, Cleric is the obvious choice! The final step was to transfer a point from Intelligence to raise her Wisdom to 19.

You can follow along with the campaign to get more updates like this one.
